Faculty of Pharmaceutical SciencesIn 1922, the Department of Pharmaceutical Techno Chemistry was established in Tokushima Higher Technical School at the suggestion of Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai, a native of Tokushima Prefecture, who discovered “Ephedrine” and founded “The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan”. The department joined the Faculty of Engineering when the University of Tokushima became a reformed national university in 1949. The department became independent as the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1951. Since then, research and research facilities have grown considerably. |

“Innovative Creation of New Drug” is a traditional concept of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences since it is the only one of its kind in Japan which originated in a faculty of engineering. The faculty is comprised of the School of Pharmacy and the School of Pharmaceutical Techno Sciences. The School of Pharmacy admits 40 undergraduate students annually and offers 6-year educational program leading to the “ Bachelor of Pharmacy” degree. The School of Pharmaceutical Techno Science admits 40 undergraduate students annually and offers 4-year educational program leading to the “Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences” degree. Students are trained through these educational programs in basic sciences for drug development and clinical pharmacy in addition to the university-wide program of general education. The clinical training program is supported by Tokushima University Hospital, which operates about 700 beds.
Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
The Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers two specialty courses: the Course of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Course of Pharmacy. The Course of Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to foster leading researchers and educators in the fields of drug discovery, development and manufacture who are capable of paying an active role worldwide and meeting diverse medical needs. This course offers a 2-year master’s program and a three-year doctoral program. The Course of Pharmacy aims to foster leading pharmacists and clinical pharmacists having broad knowledge of medicine and high ethical standards, as well as capable of conducting research to support the leading edge of drug therapy. This course offers a four-year doctoral program.
