He stands at the forefront of a paradigm shift in healthcare, uniquely bridging the gap between advanced Engineering and human-centric Nursing Science. Holding dual doctoral degrees in both fields, he is an internationally recognized pioneer and the first Japanese researcher to be inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN, 2013 class).
His interdisciplinary research focuses on the following areas: 1) research on physical rehabilitation in psychiatry; 2) improving person-centred patient care services; and 3) researching and disseminating Dr Locsin's TCCN theory
At the heart of his visionary work is the "Transactive Relationship Theory of Nursing (TRETON)," a groundbreaking framework that redefines the nursing encounter. Unlike traditional models, TRETON goes beyond human-to-human interaction to illuminate the complex, symbiotic relationships between humans and technology. This theory provides the essential philosophical and practical foundation for integrating AI, robotics, and digital health into the fabric of caring science.
To validate and implement this vision, Dr. Tanioka developed the "Intentional Observational Clinical Research Design" and a sophisticated New Mixed Methods approach. By leveraging cutting-edge AI and robotic technologies alongside advanced multivariate analysis, he has created a robust methodology to quantify and explain the intricate dynamics of healing and caring. His prolific scholarly output—over 170 English-language papers (70+ PubMed indexed)—serves as a testament to the rigor and global impact of his research.
As the Director of the Rozzano Locsin Institute (RLI), Dr. Tanioka orchestrates a global network of excellence, driving the evolution of Dr. Rozzano Locsin’s TCCN theory and leading high-impact international collaborations across the Philippines, Indonesia, and beyond.
Beyond his research, Dr. Tanioka exerts significant influence on the global scientific stage as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nursing Investigation (JNI) and as a key editorial leader for prestigious journals such as Healthcare (MDPI) and the Belitung Nursing Journal.
