The Graduate School of Medical Sciences offers four-year programs to students aspiring to original research in various fields of basic and clinical medicine. Graduates of medical or dental schools or M. Sc. holders are admitted. The degree of Ph.D. in Medical Science is granted after completion of a thesis prescribed by the Faculty and submission of a dissertation. There are faculty members of basic and clinical departments in the School of Medicine and faculty members of the Institute for Enzyme Research and the Institute for Genome Research instruct biomedical sciences.
In 2003, the Graduate School of Medicine started to offer a M.D.-Ph.D. course to students who have completed four years of the six-year course of the School of Medicine at Tokushima University. The Graduate School of Medicine also started a two-year master's program with an enrollment quota of 20 university/college graduates.
In collaboration with seven other universities in the Chugoku-Shikoku area, our proposal on Integrated Education and Training Project for Professional Oncologists at the Graduate Schools of Medical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nutrition and Bioscience, and Health Sciences of Tokushima University was selected as one of the Professional Oncologist Training Plan launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, which supports universities establishing oncologist training courses in the master’s and Ph.D. courses. This project was employed for five years from April 2007 to March 2012. In 2007, eight different Clinical Oncology Training programs were developed with a common core curriculum of clinical oncology in the Graduate Schools of the universities in the Chugoku-Shikoku area. This professional oncologist training plan is now implemented as a new program the “Promotion Plan for the Platform of Human Resource Development for Cancer” launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Ten universities in the Chugoku-Shikoku area are participating in this five-year program from April 2012 to March 2017.
Furthermore, the highest-level Biological Imaging Station in Japan, which is equipped with the Multiphoton Confocal Microscope System, the Small-Animal PET/CT System, the Multi Purpose High Field MRI/MRS Research System and the X-ray CT for Experimental Animals, was set up in 2010.
