On December 26th, 2025, a disaster prevention drill (ShakeOut Drill) was conducted for students, faculty members and staff members of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry at Tokushima University, based on the scenario of a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 originating in the Nankai Trough, with a maximum seismic intensity of 6+.
In this training, participants took the required safety precautions for the experimental equipment in advance, and then, between the time the alarm sounded and the time the strong shaking began, they quickly moved away from window glass, fluorescent lights, shelves, etc. and took shelter under desks, etc. Afterwards, they practiced ShakeOut training, which involved taking three safety actions to protect themselves from earthquake shaking: "Drop, Cover, and Hold On."
After the training, a seminar and consultation session on disaster prevention was held in the auditorium on the third floor of the Faculty of Dentistry building, with lectures given by Professor Kozuki Yasunori, Deputy Director of the Research Center for Management of Disaster and Environment, and Assistant Professor Matsushige Maya in the Crisis management research section of the center. The seminar included an introduction to emergency evacuation bags and a demonstration of portable toilets, and was an experiential session where participants could actually touch and feel the emergency supplies.
Tokushima University will continue to consider how to respond to large-scale disasters, including a major Nankai Trough earthquake.
