Message from the Dean

Otto Baba, DDS, PhD, Dean

On behalf of all our faculty, staff and students at Tokushima University Faculty of Dentistry, I am pleased to welcome you to our faculty and to our website. The Faculty of Dentistry started with the establishment of the School of Dentistry in 1976 as the only dental school in Shikoku Island and 8th national dental school in Japan. Approximately 2,000 students have already graduated from it. Then, in 2007, the School of Oral Health and Welfare was established and became part of the faculty. Approximately 150 students have already graduate from it. Most of our graduates are playing important roles in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases at various public and private health facilities in Japan while some are aggressively working as scientists at research institutes and are doing research on medical biology, biomaterials, medical and social epidemiology.

Our mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health and welfare by promoting the progress of the oral sciences. To achieve this mission, we are training clinical scientists to gain expert knowledge and skills on health care, social needs and oral problems of the general public. Likewise, we are also establishing active interactions with foreign countries and promoting collaborative research projects to contribute towards the prosperity of the world.
